On December 12, 2023, an online event in the Intecracy Expert Webinar series took place on the topic “How to evaluate the results of digital transformation.” The webinar was organized by the Intecracy Group consortium and led by Softline IT LLC, a member of Intecracy Group. The main speaker was industry expert Mykhailo Vihovskyi.

Mykhailo Vihovskyi emphasized that businesses often begin digitalization by selecting tools without first agreeing on success criteria. With that approach, modernization may look complete from a technical standpoint while still failing to deliver the expected operational impact. Evaluation therefore needs to begin with a baseline view of existing processes and a defined target model.
The speaker treated digital transformation not as a one-off IT project, but as a management process in which technology must prove its value through financial, process and strategic outcomes.
From technical delivery to business metrics
One of the webinar’s central points was the need to move away from assessing transformation only by the number of licenses deployed, rollout speed or the formal completion of a project. Those parameters may help control delivery, but they do not show whether the enterprise has become more efficient.
“The biggest mistake many companies make is that they evaluate digital transformation by the fact of IT project completion rather than by actual changes in operational efficiency. Automation for the sake of automation makes no sense. We must clearly understand how exactly the introduction of new tools affects the speed of decision-making, the reduction of transaction costs, and the mitigation of the human factor. True transformation begins when technologies change the very model of value creation, rather than simply copying outdated paper processes into a digital format,” emphasized Mykhailo Vihovskyi.
In practical terms, this means comparing As-Is and To-Be states and calculating the effect on costs, operational speed, service quality and scalability. For cloud or hybrid infrastructure, this approach helps distinguish a technology replacement from a real improvement in control and reliability.
Risks and hidden costs of automation
A separate part of the presentation focused on risks that can influence the final result. The discussion covered not only technical failures or cybersecurity, but also staff adaptation, changes to internal regulations, data quality and the integration of new solutions with existing legacy systems.
In this context, IT consulting was presented as a way to assess the current architecture in advance, determine the total cost of ownership (TCO) and build a transition roadmap. For organizations combining on-premises platforms, cloud services and managed services, an error in integration or service responsibility can directly affect business continuity.
Practical groups of indicators
At the end of the webinar, Mykhailo Vihovskyi outlined three groups of metrics for a comprehensive assessment. The first group consists of financial indicators, including ROI and the reduction of direct operating costs. The second covers process metrics: faster operations, fewer errors and improved service quality. The third includes strategic indicators such as business agility, the ability to scale and responsiveness to market changes.
The main takeaway from the event was that the criteria for evaluating digital transformation results should be defined before changes begin and reviewed throughout the transformation cycle. This connects technology investment with operational efficiency, infrastructure resilience and long-term business goals.
